British Gas is set to launch a new range of energy products that will allow consumers to generate their own energy. Wind turbines and solar panels will be built as well as fuel cell boilers will be sold to consumers to enable them to take up micro generation within sensible limits. The fuel cell boiler takes energy and power from the home and creates electricity, whereas as normal boiler takes energy from the national grid and uses it to heat the home. Excess energy made in the home can be sold back to the national grid and then used in different areas of need. This will be the future for energy production and consumption as by introducing legislation, the government is making it easier for customers to choose the technologies they use and be more effective when using and producing energy. The plan comes in to place on April 6th and the products can be installed without planning permission. The fuel cell boiler is predicted to be available by 2010 and cost between £3,000 and £4,000. British Gas can sell these boilers exclusively because they have a 10% stake in the company that produces them called Ceres Powers.
