The digital switchoverover that will take place over the next few years has freed up some prime spectrum that is currently owned by the government and Ministry of Defence. The freed up spectrum can be used for other means like mobile phone or wireless services. The ministry of defence currently hold 75% of radio spectrum but only use about 50% of that. The freed up spectrum is worth between £3 billion and £20 billion and will be available for purchase at an action. Media regulators Ofcom have given the go ahead for a market lead approach auction to take place for the new occupiers of the public sectors freed up spectrum.
